This Friday in the Screening room we will be showing Sean Baker’s Tangerine, A low-budget film shot entirely on an iPhone 5. Tangerine tells the story of Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Mya Taylor), two transgender prostitutes, who navigate Sin-Dee’s first day out of jail and the realization that her boyfriend Chester has been cheating on her. Accommodating to the film’s budget of only $100,000 Baker found many of the songs and actors featured in the film through Instagram, Vine, and Soundcloud. Both leads were cast as a result of Baker and his team’s research, as both actresses were found on the corner where the majority of the film takes place. Stories told by Rodriguez and Taylor amongst others heavily contributed to the basis of the movie’s plot line. The low budget and Baker’s dedication to an accurate storytelling combine to produce a genuine and exuberant film.

“The film got heavy buzz out of Sundance for being shot on the iPhone 5, but that’s just the start of the DIY tricks Baker used. His two main actresses—Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, the two who come together at Donut Time—Baker found just by hanging out at the aforementioned intersection and he used their real-life stories to inform his script.” Written by Angela Watercutter for Wired.com
