I’m sure most of you are familiar with, or have at least heard of the current film/digital debate that’s been going on for the last few years. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, or wish to further investigate the situation yourself – you’re in luck! Coming this year is a new documentary spearheaded by Keanu Reeves titled Side by Side which uses some of Hollywood’s biggest names in directing to explore the debate as well as touch upon the so called “death of film”. The obvious digital supporters are there – George Lucas, Robert Rodriguez, and James Cameron. Christopher Nolan is a big supporter of film. No surprises there. What I find really disheartening, however, is seeing Steven Soderbergh talk about how he’s switched to shooting in digital. He captured some beautiful work on film in Traffic and that film (or most of his others, for that matter) just wouldn’t be the same if they were shot digitally. Check out the trailer here.
