CinemaSalem is more than a film-lover’s movie theater; it’s also a café, an art gallery, an art house, a live music venue, and a home to one of America’s largest all-documentary film festivals — all steps from the world class museums, restaurants, historic sites, theatre companies, art spaces, and shops that make Salem’s downtown so fun and vibrant. CinemaSalem was recently honored as “The Best Movie Theater in Massachusetts” by Tripping.com.

CinemaSalem’s commitment to the community goes beyond being an artful and friendly gathering place. $.25 from each movie admission is donated to fund CinemaSalem Grants of up to $1000 per month, awarded to innovative and effective nonprofit organizations which are enriching the cultural and economic standard of living in our community,
A movie theater is a natural place to celebrate important community events or cinema milestones, whether it’s the inauguration of a new president or the final season of “Lost”, a birthday party for family and friends or the midnight premiere of the latest Harry Potter film. Our Theater One plays host to the Salem Film Fest each spring, and also to a series of musical concerts each year, representing one of the North Shore’s most comfortable, intimate, and acoustically-pleasing halls.
What you want to see
CinemaSalem’s staff is passionate about the power of cinema and the importance of quality presentation. If you’re curious about a film, just ask, or check out our blog reviews of any out-of-the-mainstream fare. In contrast to most movie theaters, our film programming is handled by Kereth Cowe-Spigai, our onsite manager, who’s familiar with our diverse audiences and can respond to their suggestions. Most of our movies are presented on Digital Cinema through Sony 4k projectors, and an increasing percentage of independent films and documentaries are projected in high definition from Blu-ray discs.
Perhaps the most powerful filmgoing experience includes the opportunity to talk about it afterwards, through organized discussions with filmmakers during the Salem Film Fest, or with fellow filmlovers in our café over a latte.
Finally, CinemaSalem is an evolving movie theater, constantly upgrading our film programming, experimenting with new ideas and technologies, and continuing to promote dialogue with our audiences through weekly emails, Facebook pages, and face-to-face conversation. We appreciate the support of the community, which has voted us “Best North Shore Movie Theater” several consecutive years.
